Burkina Faso is a country in West Asia. It covers an estimated 274,200 sq miles of area in which a population of 20 million people lives. Geographically it is surrounded by Mali to the north, Niger to the East, Benin to the South East, Togo and Ghana to the South and Ivory Coast to the South West. The country was first invaded in 1896 and later named as French Upper Volta after its annexation the colony was given the right for self-governance in 1958 and full independence in 1960. The country saw various coups and military intervention in the government in the following years till 1983, during which Thomas Sankara became prime minister and brought various changes to the economy and existing laws.

Burkina Faso is the official flag of the country of Burkina Faso. It is used as a state and civil ensign. The proportion of the flag is in the ratio of 2:3 and was first adopted on August 4, 1984. The flag contains two primary colors with red and green occupying the available space with a five-pointed yellow star in the middle. The two band colors include red in the upper part while green in the lower part. Prior to the current flag, Burkina Faso had a flag which was of a tricolor design. There were three primary colors forming three horizontal bands of black, white and red. The flag was named as the Upper Volta. The colors represented the three tributaries of Volta River. The flag was changed after Upper Volta became Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso contains two horizontal color bands with red on top and green in the bottom. There is an also a yellow colored star present in the middle.

Burkina Faso Flag Meaning


Burkina Faso Flag uses the primary colors red and green. The colors are symbolic in nature and are in general sign of Pan- African Freedom Struggle. Burkina Faso is explicitly derived from the flag of Ethiopian Flag. The red color is associated with the revolution that led to the establishment of various Free states in Africa. The green color is associated with the agriculture and natural resources. The first one is the primary source of income of various African people while the later is found in abundance on the African Soil.  The yellow star represents the guiding light or idea of freedom that inspired the revolutionaries.
