Bulgaria is a country in South Eastern Europe. It has an estimated population of about 7.1 million. The first Bulgarian Empire was established in 681AD which developed during the middle ages. The second empire which followed the first fell in 1936 and the land was captured by the Ottomans. Ottoman occupation continued for nearly 500 years. The Russo-Turkish war of 1877 led to formation of third Bulgarian State. The country participated with axis powers in the world wars and was annexed into the Soviet Union after the war. In 1989, the communist party allowed conducting of elections and country’s transition to democracy. Capital of Bulgaria is Sofia, its largest city.

Bulgaria Flag is the official ensign of Bulgaria. It is a tricolor with white at the top, green at the middle and red at the bottom. It was first adopted in 1879 after the Russo-Turkish war, which led to formation of the second state of Bulgaria. The flag was used till the onset of world war and the annexation by the Soviet.  It was reintroduced again in 1990, after Bulgaria became a democratic country. The proportions of the current flag are in the ratio of 3:5.

Older Bulgarian flag had originally the emblem of Bulgaria in its white strip. The emblem contained a lion within a wreath of wheat years standing below a red star. A ribbon bearing various important dates in Bulgarian History is present below. The emblem was removed after 1990.
